The role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant to the Managing Director to join a busy and engaged team in the management of all aspects of the diverse property portfolio.   The Yattendon Estate is dedicated to being a leading rural estate and is committed to exploring new ideas and business opportunities. The strong alignment of the family and the Board means there is a clear focus on long-term profit generation, based on continuous re-investment in infrastructure, technology and people.

You will therefore need to be an entrepreneurially minded property professional with the requisite commercial, people and marketing skills to work as part of a diverse and motivated team to deliver projects and seek out new opportunities.

The Estate

The estate, which sits in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, comprises approximately 9,000 acres of which 5,000 acres are farmed in-hand, 2,200 acres are woodland with the balance being split across let farms, parkland and Yattendon’s 300 acre Christmas tree operation.

The residential property portfolio comprises 173 houses, of which 116 are on Assured Shorthold Tenancies with the remainder being occupied by estate staff, pensioners or on protected tenancies.  There are a further 39 commercial tenants including two hotels / public houses and the Yattendon Village Store and Post Office which is operated as an in-house business. The longstanding commercial shoot adds a further income stream to the estate’s diversified portfolio of enterprises.  The estate employs 22 full-time equivalents and for a long time, has been an employer of choice in the local economy.

Reports to

On a daily basis, you will report to the Managing Director who has the responsibility for the running of the estate and sits on the Estate Board.  You will also assist the Residential Property Manager in the management and strategy for the Residential Portfolio, as well as supporting the Retail, Shoot, Woodlands and Christmas tree businesses.


The successful candidate will have the following attributes:

  • Up to 2 years post APC experience in the rural sector (although the estate may consider applications for those outside of this timeframe)
  • A strategic thinker with the ability to see a bigger picture but with a detailed knowledge and understanding of all types of tenancies that affect residential, commercial and agricultural properties.
  • A team player who is reliable, diligent, has good financial acumen, is approachable and has the ability to forge long standing relationships with key personnel, tenants and business partners on the estate
  • The ability to prioritise jobs to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Be able to demonstrate a drive for efficiency and the effective use of systems to deliver high quality asset management
  • An appreciation of rural and land management policy and the challenges and opportunities that it presents to the estate
