Matfen Estates is a diverse and vibrant agricultural estate business, which has been in the ownership of the Blackett Family for many generations. Located 15 miles west of Newcastle in the prosperous Tyne Valley area of south Northumberland the Estate comprises a growing in-hand farming operation as well as let farms, a property portfolio which includes let residential and commercial and a holiday cottage enterprise, commercial and amenity woodland, and energy and sporting interests.

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a capable and enthusiastic Assistant Farm and Estate Manager with a hands-on approach to support the owner and the Estate Manager, who is stepping back to a part time role, with all aspects of the running of the estate, and to provide leadership to the estates team and co-ordinate operations on the ground, in their absence.

The successful candidate is likely to have the following attributes:

  • A degree level qualification in a relevant subject linked to Farm, Estate or Land Management (or similar) is essential. A connection to the north-east desirable.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of work experience in a professional workplace/environment with good knowledge of farming and agriculture, possibly MRICS or working towards this but not essential.
  • As a key representative of the Family and Estate, you will be an engaging and professional character with excellent communications skills, able to interact and develop strong relationships with tenants and people in the local communities to reinforce the productive and collaborative environment within which the estate operates.
  • An interest and understanding of the management of the environment and its natural capital.
  • A team player, able to motivate and work alongside staff.
  • Energetic, resourceful, practical, reliable, organised with good attention to detail, and able to balance multiple priorities.

Subject to gaining the necessary experience and demonstrating the ability to work at the required level, the role provides an opportunity to progress into the full Estate Manager position in time.
