Alscot Estate - Warwickshire - Estate Manager

Job Description:

The estate is owned principally by Emma Holman-West and the trustees of the Alscot Estate. Historically the heart of the Estate is Alscot Park, a grade I listed house on the River Stour.

The combined estate extends to some 4,000 acres and comprises around: -

  • 2 agricultural holdings tenancies & 1 FBT
  • 110 residential properties
  • 450 acres of commercial woodland
  • 145 commercially let premises
  • 48 acre in hand biodiversity net gain project and farm, with further land identified for the roll out of phase two later in 2022


The Estate principally comprises private and discretionary trust owned property.

Employment – Estate staff comprises: Estate Office personnel, build and maintenance persons, woodsmen, house and garden staff at Alscot Park along with other part time seasonal workers.

The role – The family’s interests have grown in recent years and thus this estate requires focussed environmental and land management services going forward to deliver the aims of the owner and her Trustees with regards to all property management, farming, forestry, and developing and managing rural diversification projects.

The proposal is that the new incumbent will start in mid-September 2022. The role requires the land agent or estate/farm manager to work with the owner and directors to manage constructively their property and other assets while identifying new opportunities for development and income enhancement. He or she will work closely with the Estate office team (whose primary area of focus is the let property and financial side) and the Manager of Alscot Park.

The successful applicant is likely to be:

  • Someone with at least 5 years relevant experience
  • Forward thinking and someone prepared to take the initiative
  • A good communicator
  • Someone excited by the challenge
  • Of a character, energy and commitment to ensure success
  • Capable of managing and developing environmental projects including BNG, Cardon and sustainability
  • Managing the security and privacy of the family
  • Have an understanding and empathy with the estate’s social and environmental responsibilities
  • Support to managing a portfolio of agricultural, residential and commercial property, identifying and exploiting any opportunities identified therein
  • A practical knowledge and application of health and safety regulations and responsibilities
  • Proactive, entrepreneurial and prepared to identify and exploit opportunities within the estate

Notwithstanding the need for professional qualifications and experience, personality and commitment are equally important.

Principle Tasks –

  • To take the Estate’s environmental aims and projects forward
  • Part of the management team, working with the owner and estate office team, with regard to forestry, sporting rights, residential, commercial and rural opportunities and developing and managing rural diversification projects
  • Achieve added value for the estate through development opportunities including rural diversification, tourism and leisure, building conversions, commercial development, minerals, waste management and renewable (as appropriate)
  • Manage the farming arrangements
  • Manage the forestry enterprise
  • Manage sporting rights
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation including employment law, rental housing, Health and Safety legislation, and with best practice within the industry
  • Acquire a knowledge of all relevant grant systems and take steps to secure these for the Estate
  • To engage positively with the community both professionally and socially
  • Exert clear effective management controls by operating within the annual budget
  • Provide sound, clear and timely information and advice to the owners
  • Public relations as and when necessary
  • Instructing and liaison with the Estate Solicitors
  • Representing the clients locally, including liaison with local and County Councils, village groups, LPA’s, LEP, Chamber of Commerce and other relevant authorities and maintaining relations with them
  • Liaison with public authorities, utilities etc. including highways, public access, easements and wayleaves

    Remuneration – A competitive salary commensurate with experience, plus accommodation and expenses

    Hours of work - Based at the Estate Office, no set hours but the office is open 8.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday. Some out of hours work will be required to ensure the efficient running of the Estate
