Foreword

This numbered publication is our first paper on hydraulic fracturing for shale gas. It reviews what is, for the UK, a newly emerging industry and technology, one that appears very much on the political agenda of today’s Government.

This paper looks at the geology, history and technology of shale gas and hydraulic fracturing (fracking), energy policy, relevant regulation and planning and then, very importantly, the issues raised for landowners from initial surveys through to production.

Very usefully, the Annexes provide practical advice on factors to consider in granting 3D surveying rights, options and leases for well sites and other matters relevant to members and their clients with regard to fracking.

This is a very comprehensive summary of a subject that is still only emerging in this country. It should be of particular assistance to members as they first meet fracking projects, relevant to those with clients affected by coal bed methane and other schemes and of wider interest to all members. As the industry and technology develops, many more members are likely to meet this in practice. This text gives a first practical guide.
