Job description:

Lead Surveyor – 2x 12 Month Fixed Term Contract

We currently have two 12-month FTC Lead Surveyor positions within our Land and Property team. The team is based in our Livingstone House, Leeds office but you will also have the flexible option to work from one of our other Yorkshire sites and from home.

Purpose of role

Managing an area team to support the department in the implementation of land strategy; seeking opportunities and maximising returns (including the six capitals approach) from effective use of land from across Yorkshire Water’s property significant landholding.  Working closely and developing relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.

Key Accountabilities

The successful candidates will have the following responsibilities:

  • Up to £2m rental income and up to £3.6m Gross of land sales Financial Accountability
  • Working as part of a team to implement land strategy and to support the day to day management of the estate
  • Lead in the development, implementation and reporting of the relevant Land Strategy Initiatives identifying opportunities for growth and income generation
  • Lead and Manage a team of up to three people
  • Responsible for the compliance of your area property / land portfolio and ensuring targets are met in line with wider department business plan targets
  • Responsible for taking appropriate action when delivering effective management of the estate coupled with the ability to be decisive on complex land issues
  • Building and maintaining relationships with people within YW and other Group companies
  • Building and maintaining relationships within external stakeholders to enhance opportunities and brand reputation
  • Demonstrating high levels of professionalism and leadership

Other Responsibilities

  • Supporting the Operational Land Manager in the delivery of the rental and sales programme to ensure YWS’s annual financial targets are achieved
  • Managing the relevant Land Strategy Initiative, reporting in accordance to agreed timescale
  • Managing area team workloads, ensuring that staff obtain all necessary professional guidance and mentoring
  • Managing the programme of works for the estate using capital and revenue budgets and ensuring that YWS meets all legal obligations
  • Establishing good connections with colleagues in across the business to identify land and properties that are underutilised and may be available for sale or transfer including risk management.
  • Supporting the team in liaising with Keyland Developments Limited (KDL) to identify and manage a supply of sites for intercompany transfer
  • Supporting a team approach to YW’s business; initiating, preparing, planning and delivering other specific projects and/or initiatives including proposals for changing and improving the business

Knowledge and Skills Required


  • Membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors
  • A track record of delivering results against challenging financial targets
  • A proven ability to manage an internal team of professionals
  • A proven ability to work under pressure to meet tight timescales by good prioritisation and time management skills
  • An extensive knowledge of the regional property markets
  • An extensive knowledge and experience of the legal and regulatory requirements relating to the ownership, management and sale of land and property
  • An understanding of property legislation and processes
  • Skills to manage others


  • Familiarity with the company’s IT systems (SAP, Microsoft Office, Odyssey, etc.)
