The Estate

The Swinton Estate is a multi-enterprise business covering over 20,000 acres of stunning countryside on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and has been owned by the Cunliffe-Lister family since the 1880s. The estate’s interests include property, leisure, forestry, renewable energy and agriculture. The Estate places excellence at the heart of everything we do.

The Role

The owners have created a key post for a forward looking Head of Forestry and Grounds with a ‘can do’ outlook manage the estate’s 1,650 acres of mixed lowland and upland broadleaf and conifer woods to maximise value, and improve their biodiversity and environmental benefit, and the Grade II listed parkland.

This is a senior leadership role within the Estate, reporting to the Estate Director but with regular contact with the owners, and is a fantastic opportunity to influence the long term woodland strategy on a progressive estate.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To take a leading role in setting the annual budget, managing the Woodlands and Grounds accounts and applying financial control.
  • To prepare and implement Woodland Management Plans.
  • To manage all woodland and grounds operations and related staffing issues.
  • To identify and secure grant funding for woodland operations where appropriate.
  • To manage forestry and grounds contractors as required.
  • Ensure that FSC 5 year certification and annual monitoring is undertaken and compliance achieved at all times.
  • Liaise with local authorities, parish councils, etc over TPOs, conservation area issues and village greens, ensuring any compliance requirements are met.
  • Undertake a rolling programme of tree inspections and take action as required

About You

You will be an effective leader with a track record of working at a high level within the forestry or environmental sectors and have an excellent knowledge of woodland management, highlighting your ability to communicate and influence others and creating opportunities to add value.
