A rare opportunity to join the senior management team at Savills.  The successful candidate will be an experienced, qualified, financially and commercially astute rural surveyor able to take a leading role within the Rural Estate Management business in the South West.

Our Exeter and Taunton offices cover all of Devon and Cornwall, plus parts of Somerset and Dorset too.  The combined team offer the widest range of property services of any competitor in the region, across residential, rural, retail, healthcare, hotels, leisure, marine and more.  There are approximately 35 staff in the Rural, Energy and Projects (REP) teams across both offices.  It is anticipated that the candidate would lead the Exeter based management team, inheriting a firm foundation of pre-existing work, and work closely with Simon Derby, head of the management businesses across both offices.  The candidate will report directly to clients and have responsibility for all relevant management matters, to include lease renewals, rent reviews, financial management, planning and development as part of the day to day role.  They should be innovative and forward thinking when helping clients develop the strategy for their business.

The region is supported by the almost-limitless knowledge, resources and research within the national and international Savills network, and as a senior member of the team you will be expected to liaise with your counterparts across the country and to contribute to business development throughout Savills both within and beyond the rural division.

Key Responsibilities

  • To undertake the primary relationship role with a number of rural estate owning clients, providing strategic estate management advice and overseeing all aspects of delivery
  • Leading a team of assistant property managers and administrators to deliver Estate Management services to a range of private, charitable and institutional clients
  • Contributing to Exeter and Taunton’s rural management senior leadership team, with responsibility for delivering strategy and driving the business forward within the region
  • Management, supervision and development of team members
  • Consistently delivering high performance from a team of professionals  
  • To lead, contribute to and support business development initiatives and tenders, targeting and winning new business, agreeing the scope of instructions and fees as appropriate
  • As part of the department’s senior leadership team, to ensure tight financial management of the department by monitoring forecast and actual income and expenditure, debtors and recovery of disbursements at both departmental and client levels
  • To represent the firm and the department across the region in a manner consistent with the firm’s ethos, promoting the firm and its various service lines
  • To help promote and deliver the firm’s compliance procedures and standards
  • Along with other members of the department’s senior leadership team, to monitor and encourage staff development through the firm’s appraisal process and through mentoring and coaching.
  • Encourage good communication between all disciplines within the locality

People Leadership:

  • To set clear objectives in line with company/Divisional/team strategy and to measure performance against these
  • To conduct regular 121’s, hold team meetings and complete thorough probationary, interim and annual appraisals as per company guidelines
  • To support team members in career development via training (to ensure high skill levels both technically & behaviourally), coaching, mentoring and the promotion and succession/talent processes
  • To adhere to all company processes with regards to people management and to role model professional behaviours at all times
  • To ensure recruitment is completed professionally and in line with team/divisional/company goals, thinking strategically re future needs and in line with our diversity goals

Technical experience

  • MRICS or FAAV essential
  • Relevant experience in the rural sector with comprehensive technical knowledge and a strong understanding of landlord and tenant law and practice, and property compliance
  • Cost management: financial and commercial acumen with strong planning, budgeting and operational reporting skills
  • Clear written and verbal communication style
  • Highly competent and skilled with Microsoft Office, including Excel.  Training will be provided in respect of internal systems.
  • Driving licence essential.

People management and leadership experience, able to evidence:

  • In partnership with other Directors to be responsible for strategic growth of teams, via recruitment and organic growth
  • Proven ability to develop skills and enable personal and professional growth of individuals
  • Able to delegate effectively for maximum results
  • A motivator, able to create successful team working and individual performance and engagement
  • Experience of successful conflict management and performance management
