The Role

This multi-disciplined rural estate has evolved out of a traditional estate history.  It extends to 38,000 acres and comprises agricultural, forestry, property (residential and commercial), fishing, minerals and a holiday let portfolio.  It employs approximately 10 full time permanent members of staff.

The business is led by the Estate Manager whose role is to manage the local staff and their enterprises to ensure the delivery of financial and management targets.  This requires the balancing of the needs of a large rural estate, parts of which follow a traditional structure, with developing a trading business and tourist operation.  

Key Responsibilities

The role and responsibilities of the Estate Manager are:

  • To provide leadership across the business, growing the effectiveness of the team through high standards in all that they do.
  • Close management of Estate employees, motivating and supporting the workforce to achieve high standards of delivery alongside tenant, partner and customer care. 
  • Reflecting the growth and development of the business, to put in place within a realistic time frame a financial, property and accountancy function fully commensurate with the wide ranging requirements of the business.  This to deliver real time management information, a focused suite of P&L linked reports, efficient processing capability and debtor management, real time property terrier and investment appraisal.  Assess the resources and capabilities of the accountancy team to ensure these match the financial management requirements of the business.
  • Review, implement and deliver the Estate’s Business Plan, enhancing scale and margin.
  • Adopt a dynamic, forward-looking and profit led approach to the business.
  • Take P&L responsibility for the management and development of the Estate; review and develop the parameters for the financial and management performance of the business to allow for proactivity and reactivity to market conditions.
  • Oversee annual budget preparation across main departments; delivery of the budget year on year, cash flow monitoring and forecasting.
  • Review and enhance lines of communication and reporting structures within and between departments bringing clarity and purpose to the business, developing autonomy and building confidence.
  • Concise and timely reporting to clients, Trustees, staff and where applicable to external stakeholders; written, verbal, graphics and presentations where appropriate.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and including close adherence to all Health and Safety regulations.
  • Work closely and with empathy with all external stakeholders, including professional advisors, and local communities.
  • Acting as a key ambassador for the business at a local, national and international level.
  • Protect and develop the estate brand.
  • Proactively seek new business streams that complement and enhance the existing business.
  • Be attuned to the Scottish economic, political, environmental, cultural and social backcloth and embed this in planning the management and future stewardship of the business.
  • At all times to work closely with the owners reporting in a structured and consistent fashion.
  • To work with the owners and the senior advisors in developing and delivering the longer term strategy of the owners and the business.
