A rare opportunity for an Assistant Farm and Estate Manager to undertake a wide-ranging role encompassing the full breadth of agricultural and estate management duties with Lord Rayleigh’s Farms Limited, a family owned farming and property company based on the Terling Estate, near Chelmsford in Essex.

The company farms approximately 8,500 acres in-hand, comprising mainly arable cropping with a small Suckler beef herd, and they are also involved in a large sheep rearing enterprise in Norfolk. The built estate includes an impressive property portfolio of residential, commercial and other let property, 600 acres of commercially managed woodlands and renewable energy interests.


Assisting with the day to day running of the Estate, supporting the Farm Manager and Resident Agent with a range of general farm and estate management duties including:

  • BPS Claims, Countryside Stewardship/HLS claims
  • Overseeing the implementation of a new 10-year woodland management plan
  • Management of the let portfolio including tenancy renewals/new  tenancies/rent reviews
  • Computer mapping, boundary issues and other general Estate duties
  • Dealing with requests for access to the estate from utility companies and private individuals
  • Assisting with significant new business initiatives


  • Agricultural or estate management degree or relevant workplace experience
  • Ideally between 2-5 years’ experience as a farm consultant/farm manager or rural surveyor, possibly MRICS or BASIS and FACTS but not essential
  • A friendly, energetic and practical person, hands-on with common sense
  • Ability to prioritise and co-ordinate tasks
  • Business acumen, financially and IT literate
