Job description:

A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for a RICS qualified rural practice surveyor to assist the Resident Agent in the management of four diverse rural estates extending to 20,000 acres throughout Yorkshire, owned by the Earl of Halifax, Lord Irwin and Family Settlements.

The successful applicant will probably have 3-5 years post qualification experience in rural estate management and be capable of undertaking a diverse and interesting workload including in-hand farming, agricultural tenancies, residential and commercial lettings, planning work, project co-ordination, renewable energy schemes, forestry, development, diversification, digital mapping and budgeting.  There will also be involvement in the Garrowby Shoot, widely regarded as one of the best high pheasant shoots in the world.

The University of York is developing a new campus on Estate land at Heslington on the edge of York and this involves a significant ongoing input from the management team.

Based on Garrowby Estate which is on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds, 14 miles east of York, the ideal applicant would have the following experience, skills and qualities:

  • The necessary broad and relevant experience to become immediately effective in the role.
  • Confident and highly motivated.
  • Proactive and energetic.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
  • The knowledge and experience to take a leading line management role in the in-hand farming operation, Forestry Department, Residential Lettings Department and Game Department.
  • Well developed cost management skills including budget preparation and cashflows.
  • Good IT skills and experience with digital mapping software (the Estate uses Pear Mapping).  Knowledge of Landmark Key Prime would also be an advantage.
  • Experience of diversification projects.

The Resident Agent, who has been with Halifax Estates for 34 years, will be retiring over the next 3-4 years so this could be an excellent opportunity for the successful applicant to demonstrate the necessary qualities to be considered for the role.

An attractive remuneration package is offered including a rent free house.
