Townsend Chartered Surveyors

Job description:

Join a forward-thinking and creative team of rural surveyors providing local and national traditional land agency services with a reputation for excellence.

  • The partnership is the leading national entitlement agency in the UK, building upon its experience in trading farm quotas since 1992.
  • A diverse and broad-based range of professional services are provided to national as well as local clients, including Countryside Stewardship and BPS claims, estate management, landlord & tenant, rent reviews, land sales and valuations.
  • From this broad base of experience, expertise has built up in specialised areas for which the partnership is renowned.
  • We are also the WMN farming section land agent/surveyor expert.

We are committed to encouraging employees to build upon their strengths, and believe that those who are working in areas that they enjoy will succeed. We work closely with our surveying team to design their training around a broad-based grounding in all areas that a traditional land agent would come across, without over-specialising at too early a stage. We are able to do this by providing early client contact and a high level of support, enabling employees to quickly fulfil their potential.

The ideal candidate for the graduate role will have completed an RICS accredited rural degree and have an interest in joining a small traditional land agency firm. Trainees will gain a wide range of experience throughout the rural sector and we will work with you to achieve the required level in all your APC competencies, building on your previous knowledge and interests within the rural sector. In addition CAAV training is offered if you are not already a fellow.

Our trainees have a proven track record of successfully achieving their chartered status as rural surveyors (RICS) and agricultural valuers (CAAV), whilst enjoying exciting challenges in their day to day employment (please see “Join Us” on our website,, for testimonials).

The ideal candidate for the qualified surveyor role will have

  • rural estate management and rural planning experience;
  • have experience of preparing and submitting BPS, CSS and other agricultural grant applications;
  • be able to take on a wide range of rural professional work;
  • have the confidence and charisma to build on and expand our estate and land agency instructions;

The salary offered will be appropriate to the level of experience and qualification of the successful candidate, with an annual programmed salary review.

Significant opportunities for career development are available for the right candidate.

The position is available from March 2019 or at a later date, depending on the availability of the successful candidate.

All applicants will be treated in the strictest confidence.  If you are interested in this opportunity please email your CV and a covering letter to Julia Clark at in the first instance, or do feel free to ring Hugh Townsend.
