The Berkeley and Spetchley Estates

The role attracts a gross salary of £40,000 per annum - An appropriate house on the Estate may be made available subject to separate negotiation.

Job description:

The Estates

The Berkeley & Spetchley Estates are two geographically separate Estates (one in Gloucestershire and one in Worcestershire) that are jointly owned by the Berkeley family and their associated entities. Largely comprising 10,000 acres of agricultural land, about 140 houses and cottages, two pubs, a hotel, various commercial properties, a Norman Castle at Berkeley and Historic Gardens at Spetchley (both with visitor enterprises), the business is diverse but mainly property based.

The Spetchley Estate comprises approximately 4,000 acres incorporating 45 residential lets, 7 let farms, various other land lettings and a small commercial property portfolio. In addition, there is an in-hand suckler beef enterprise, a contract farming operation covering 650 acres, a pheasant and partridge shoot and a deer park. At the centre of the Estate is Spetchley Park, a Georgian mansion house which is surrounded by 30 acres of historic gardens under the stewardship of a Charitable Trust. The gardens attract 20,000 people each year.

It is a very exciting time for the Spetchley Estate in particular. Strategically located adjacent to the city of Worcester and with good communication links, the Estate is full of potential.

The Role

This role is critical to Spetchley’s future. Having day to day responsibility for the Spetchley Estate but with the support of the Estate Director who is based at Berkeley, the role provides an opportunity for someone to have the autonomy of running their own Estate but with appropriate back-up.

The role encompasses the usual responsibilities and disciplines of a traditional rural Estate, mainly comprising the letting and management of the residential, agricultural and commercial tenancies, deploying the repair, maintenance, renovation and conversion budget, managing the Estate team and monitoring the various enterprises associated with the Estate.

Skills & Attributes

The successful applicant will have had experience in Estate Management, either on an estate or within a firm. They will ideally be RICS qualified. Experience of agricultural, residential and commercial tenancies and knowledge of tenancy law will be essential.

Efficiency and organisational skills are key, as are good team management skills. A willingness to take a commercial approach to the running of a traditional estate is also essential. A positive attitude will be important in achieving the necessary change on the Estate.

Experience of preparing appraisals and running small to medium scale development schemes would be beneficial.

Good IT skills are expected in the usual areas of Outlook, Word and Excel. Training will be given in any other systems such as our straightforward Property Manager system.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae with a covering letter to Mrs Gail Wadey by email to or by post to The Estate Office, Berkeley Castle, Berkeley, Gloucestershire GL13 9BQ. Further details and a job description are available from our website

Closing Date for Applications: 6th April 2018.
