Tenant Farmers Association

(Up to £30,000 per year depending on experience)

Job description:

The Tenant Farmers Association (TFA) was formed in 1981 by a group of tenant farmers who felt their interests were not being represented forcefully by existing bodies.  Since then it has grown to be the strongest voice representing the agricultural tenanted sector in England and Wales and exerts a major influence on its behalf at all levels of Government.  The TFA is also aiming to represent the interests of all farmers who do not own the land use for farming

The TFA represents and advises members on all aspects of agricultural tenancy, land occupation and ancillary matters.  It also aims to improve the professional and technical knowledge of its members, to increase the flow of new opportunities onto the market and to help the farming industry best apply existing agricultural tenancy and land occupation legislation.

Candidate Specifications

The TFA is looking for an individual to fulfil an advisory role at its Head Office in Theale near Reading in Berkshire for a fixed term contract of one year.   We are seeking a candidate who is enthusiastic, professional, highly organised and motivated for this important role.

This is a particularly crucial time as we are looking at a future outside of the European Union and the development of new national policies for food, farming and the environment.  The successful candidate will have an important role to play in liaising with Government Departments and Statutory Agencies on both the existing schemes available through the Common Agricultural Policy and in developing new arrangements for the post Brexit era.

Ideally, we will be looking for candidates with previous experience in advisory or farm policy roles.  Recent graduates and postgraduates are also encouraged to apply as well as individuals who are looking for a career in the land agency profession.

Reporting to the TFA’s Chief Executive, the successful candidate will be expected to advise members on a wide range of farming and rural policy matters including, domestic agricultural policy in England and Wales, the Basic Payment Scheme, agri-environment schemes, planning, rural development and also have an input into the TFA’s policy development work.   The post will involve some travel throughout Great Britain, mainly in England and Wales.

An affinity with the agricultural industry and a demonstrable ability to work flexibly in a small team, often independently, will also be requirements for the role.  Candidates should be educated to at least degree level but no professional qualifications are required.

The successful candidate will be involved in the following tasks:

  • Development and enhancement of the Association's policy and advocacy work.
  • Representing the TFA in meetings and discussions with outside bodies including Government Departments and Agencies.
  • Providing advice, information and support on agricultural and rural policy issues to members of the Association who will make contact with TFA Head Office through a variety of means including by telephone, post, email and in face to face meetings.
  • Producing and updating advisory publications for Association members including Guidance Notes, Briefing Notes and contributing to regular TFA Newsletters.
  • Keeping the Association's staff and officers informed of major issues and problems being reported by members.
  • Speaking at meetings arranged by the Association and at meetings arranged by other bodies.
