Estate Manager

An experienced estate manager is wanted for an innovative 1,500-acre estate in Staffordshire.  The candidate must share our passion for woodland and for farming practices that will increase resilience to climate change.

The successful candidate will have their own ideas for innovation but will also have proven ability to lead teams and projects in property, forestry and agriculture.  Amongst other research projects, the estate is host to the BIFOR FACE experiment, a partnership with the University of Birmingham (, and the estate manager will liaise with senior scientists as well as forestry professionals, farmers and estate workers.

The estate team is growing and the estate manager must be able to motivate and inspire, working effectively with the following:

  • the agriculture manager to implement the transition from intensive arable to herbal leys across the estate’s 500 acres of agricultural land;
  • the head forester and forestry consultants to ensure the successful delivery of the woodland management plan across 350 acres of mature woodland and 380 acres of young plantations established over the last 9 years and to develop innovative new planting projects;
  • the sales manager of Shelmore Timber, the estate’s rapidly growing sawmill business to maximise the return from surplus timber generated by the woodland management operations;
  • property professionals who are advising on a number of projects including upgrading residential and commercial buildings and finding a use for a complex of listed buildings forming part of a scheduled ancient monument;
  • the estate owners in shaping the future direction of the estate.  Funding is available for innovation in all areas.
  • an experienced estate secretary and accountant to deliver excellent day to day management and financial control across the estate.

You will:

  • be educated to degree level, a member of RICS or hold a similar qualification;
  • be innovative with an ability to spot opportunities and creative solutions;
  • be analytical;
  • have excellent communication skills;
  • be a team player with the ability to develop effective relationships;
  • have strong project management skills; and
  • be financially literate and experienced at managing a significant budget.

This is a senior role and the remuneration package will be based on experience.  Accommodation is available.
