Governments have a major influence on rural land and business through laws, regulations, schemes, taxes and other tools.  The outcome is often complex as well as important and, if badly done, can be perverse, damaging, surprising or just ineffective.

The CAAV is not a lobbying body but, with its detailed knowledge of rural land and business, looks to work with all relevant governments to ensure that policy design considers implementation and that the outcome is more likely to be practical and workable, recognising the interactions with other issues and the influences on rural families and businesses.

The CAAV works closely with many parts of DEFRA as well as HMRC, DDCMS, MHCLG, the Treasury and other departments in London as well as with the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish Governments.  In past rounds of CAP reform, it has engaged with the EU Commission and others in the EU.   In turn, this helps the CAAV brief its members effectively.

The myriad issues accompanying Brexit, including initial changes to future policies, call heavily on the CAAV as work now could set policies for a generation.

In this, it meets and works with a large number of other representative bodies, bringing a professional input to the discussions.
